Bio
Thierry Hochstätter is a Swiss musician and composer, born in Geneva in 1962. Specializing in drums and percussion instruments, he began studying music at an early age, first at the Geneva Conservatory, then at the Swiss Jazz School in Berne. At the age of just 19, convinced that his path lay in modern, improvisational music, he left for Los Angeles to attend the Musician's Institute, one of California's great talent revelations of the '80s.
Returning to Switzerland a year and a half later, he immediately embarked on a multi-faceted career that would make him one of Switzerland's most active professional musicians. His career has led him to collaborate with artists such as Moncef Genoud and Bob Berg on the jazz scene, as well as accompanying Youssou N'Dour, Zizi Jeanmaire and Catherine Ribeiro. At the same time, he lends his drumsticks both on stage and in the studio to a wide range of rock, jazz and event projects.
His work as a composer has always been closely linked to the world of stage, theater and choreography. Author of musical pieces and sound environments for directors and choreographers such as Maurice Béjart, Roland Petit, Dominique Catton, Patrice Moullet Alpes and Gil Roman, he continually builds and develops an original body of work, largely centered on the creation of instruments designed by his own hands.
Last but not least, private and institutional teaching is also an important part of his life. For over 20 years, most of them at Maurice Béjart's side, he has been teaching body rhythm for dancers, and works as a permanent teacher for the École Rudra Béjart. His other transmission activities include numerous courses for the Institut Jacques Dalcroze, clinics for the cymbal player Zildjian, and artistic direction of the multi-arts companies PerkImBa and Citypercussion.
